Evening on the Lake Honoree: Tom Califano

Clients are "extremely impressed at his ability to control a room and get an outcome," while "[o]bservers admire that he is constantly thinking of new ideas and ways to help clients." – Chambers USA
Fondly known as “The Big Sexy” by his friends and clients (after the former world heavyweight wrestler), Tom is a true, blue New Yorker in every sense of the word.  He’s Big, Smart, Stylish and Giving – all attributes of The Big Apple.  While Tom was born in Toronto, his parents wanted to “wake up in a city that never sleeps” and moved to Brooklyn when Tom was a bouncing two year-old.  His wonderful wife, Carol, was born and raised in Queens and they have raised their three children, Claudia, Victoria and Thomas Jr., in Long Island.  The Califano family has a deep love, appreciation and commitment to New York City and believes in giving back to those less fortunate – which is at the core of Citizens Committee for New York City’s mission.
Tom went to St. John’s University and St. John’s University School of Law in Queens and has been practicing restructuring law for the last 29 years.  Professionally, Tom is the US Co-Chair of the Restructuring Practice at DLA Piper.  He has a broad-ranging global practice in all aspects of corporate, real estate, public and private restructuring and insolvency matters, including out-of-court workouts and chapter 11 reorganizations and liquidations.  Tom represents distressed private and public companies, funds, purchasers of distressed debt and parties in interest, including board of directors of distressed companies. His particular emphasis is on company and buyer side representation and he has extensive experience in healthcare industry, oil and gas, retail and industrial sectors, among others.
When Tom is not playing bocce ball or golf with his buddies, or smoking his cigars, he and Carol love to enjoy wine, travel and the arts.
