Cash Back
Every year, thousands of low-income New Yorkers miss out on money that is rightfully theirs for one simple reason: they don't file their taxes. This happens for a variety of reasons: some people believe they are not able to file taxes because they are cash workers, some are concerned about immigration status, and some just simply don't know how to file taxes.
Cash Back is an annual initiative designed to help thousands of first-time filers and other low income earners take advantage of tax credits, such as the child tax credit and the earned income tax credit, that can give them thousands of dollars in tax refunds. Cash Back works with teams of tax preparers throughout New York City to help first-time filers and low-income residents file their taxes and claim their refunds for free. Often times, tax preparers can also sign up residents for benefts, such as food stamps and free or low-cost health insurance.
Although April 15th was the official end of tax season, this year's economic stimulus package gives you a little more time to file if you expect a refund. If you are earning $54,000 or less, you can still file your taxes online for free by visiting www.beehivenyc.org/CashBack until October 15th.
