Bruno Destrez Double Bass / Bass Repairs

West Village, Manhattan

Project snapshot

For over 30 years, I?ve taught the specialized craft of bass luthiery at institutions worldwide. However, the pandemic led to the closure of many shops in NYC, leaving bassists with limited instrument repair and maintenance options. Currently, I?m collaborating with educational institutions in NYC to organize lectures and workshops, aiming to establish a bass luthier center. Thanks to a 2023 grant, we’ve begun rebuilding by purchasing materials for numerous instrument restorations, signaling our commitment to the community. We’re planning to expand our workspace and launch an apprenticeship program. Meanwhile, we continue supporting bass musicians through limited-space operations and developing online resources to assist them further. Our goal is to sustain and grow this essential service, maintaining a vibrant music culture in NYC.
