Project snapshot
My project aims to reduce flooding in Southeast Queens by planting water-absorbing trees like willows and poplars. This pilot will assess their impact on the groundwater table in communities such as Springfield Gardens, Laurelton, and South Jamaica, which suffer from chronic flooding. Our grassroots organizations, alongside residents and local businesses, will identify planting sites. Community involvement is key to determining the project’s success in reducing water intrusion into homes. This initiative will strengthen community relationships by addressing the long-standing issue of flooding and fostering engagement among residents, businesses, and local government. Successful outcomes will lead to advocacy for expanding the project across Southeast Queens. The trees require minimal maintenance, making this a sustainable solution.
