Project snapshot
The M’Finda Kalunga Community Garden has been a cornerstone of our community, celebrating Juneteenth since 2004 to educate and promote cross-cultural understanding. In collaboration with FABnyc and others, we’ll unveil a memorial to the Chrystie Street Burial Ground, further embedding African Heritage into the Lower East Side’s history. Bob Humber, our dedicated Head Gardener, exemplifies our outreach through personal connections, engaging with nearly everyone who passes by. Our Juneteenth celebrations unite seniors, youth, and long-time members, reinforcing our shared history. As Juneteenth gains national recognition, we continue to use it to connect new and old community members, ensuring our garden remains a vibrant hub of cultural heritage and unity.
