The study of Greece?s folkloric traditions involves navigating national identity, politics, and religion, making it both important and urgent. I am committed to researching, presenting, and preserving these authentic traditions through Meraki. We approach folkloric education holistically, teaching the unique styles of movement and musical interaction. Historical context is provided through lectures and multimedia presentations. To help students feel the rhythms, especially those unfamiliar with odd counts, we use repetitive movements and music theory lessons. Meraki aims to foster a sense of community, or parea, by hosting events where musicians, artists, chefs, and dancers can share their talents and join in circle dances. A grant will help us rent practice space, grow the program, and recruit participants, ensuring Meraki’s sustainability.
