East Harlem/El Barrio community land trust

Washington Heights, Manhattan

Project snapshot

The Youth Garden Collective transforms vacant lots into urban gardens operated by local teenagers, producing fresh fruits and vegetables for free distribution to food-insecure households and low-cost sales at community pop-up markets. The project provides workforce development and horticultural training, reduces food deserts, increases access to nutritious produce, and stimulates local economic activity. It leverages youth leadership, volunteer coordination, and sustainable cultivation practices to enhance food security, community resilience, and public health.
