Friends of Colonel Young Park/Malcolm X Community Improvement Association

Harlem, Manhattan

Project snapshot

I believe a clean park can uplift the Harlem community. Residents have praised our efforts, creating a sense of ownership and responsibility for maintaining the park?s cleanliness. As we maintain visibility, more people show interest in helping. We update our Facebook page and attend community board meetings to promote park activities. We maintain two flower gardens and mow the lawns, enhancing the park?s beauty and positively impacting residents. We also care for the greenspace honoring the 369th “Harlem Hellfighters.” Plans include a flower garden to prevent flooding and control rodents. We sustain our work by purchasing tools and equipment. Pending ConEdison’s approval, future goals include painting park structures, adding a mural of Brigadier General Charles Young, and placing banners of famous Harlem residents on light poles.
