Project snapshot
Gowanus Mutual Aid/NYCHA CSA is a volunteer-driven initiative providing free, fresh, regionally sourced produce to residents of Gowanus Houses, Wyckoff Gardens, and Warren Street NYCHA communities. Since its launch in 2021, this program has expanded to serve approximately 350 households per distribution, ensuring access to high-quality fruits and vegetables that far exceed local grocery store offerings in both freshness and longevity. By working closely with tenant leaders, the CSA organizes biweekly market-style distributions, fostering community engagement while supporting regional farms, including women- and BIPOC-owned businesses. Volunteers play a crucial role in the operation, from early morning setup to ensuring a smooth and dignified distribution process. Despite logistical challenges like weather and lack of storage, the program thrives, adapting each season to meet growing demand. As a vital source of food security and wellness for many NYCHA residents, continued support will help sustain and expand this essential community service.
