Project snapshot
Future Farms organizes a student-managed aquaponics lab converting an underutilized classroom into a closed-loop aquaponics system where fish waste fertilizes leafy greens, herbs, and small vegetables. Students design, build, and operate systems, monitor water quality (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, nutrients), optimize lighting and circulation, and document yield and process data. The project doubles school-grown produce, builds technical STEM skills, and advances local food security, environmental stewardship, and health justice by supplying fresh produce to the Red Hook community and training students in sustainable urban agriculture.
