Loisaida Open Streets Community Coalition

East Village, Manhattan

Project snapshot

Our audience is the diverse community of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, adjacent to a highway and power plant, with limited green space and safe walking/cycling routes. The area faces rapid changes, income inequality, and varying needs. I aim to build on our 2023 pilot environmental program by creating an annual Sustainability Fair. This event will educate residents on contributing to a greener NYC, addressing local sustainability challenges, energy usage, composting, tree stewardship, and cooling centers. Our free and inclusive programming targets those often excluded from such activities. Our members include local nonprofit directors, small business advocates, and tenant organizers. Funding from DOT, Partnerships for Parks, and the Puffin Foundation sustains our activities. Support from the Citizens Committee will elevate our environmental programs.
