Project snapshot
The Morningside Heights Community Coalition is launching a thrift shop initiative to promote sustainability, affordability, and community engagement in Manhattan Community District 9. This project aims to reduce waste, support local affordability, and create a much-needed community hub by accepting tax-deductible donations of lightly used clothing, household goods, and other items. This project supports a planning process, community outreach, and a pilot reuse & recycle event in May 2025, allowing MHCC to gauge local interest and refine the concept. The long-term goal is to secure a brick-and-mortar space that will serve both as a thrift shop and a gathering space for local groups, artists, and community events. With Morningside Heights’ high student turnover generating a steady supply of donations, this initiative will extend the life cycle of goods, reduce the neighborhood’s carbon footprint, and provide affordable items to residents, all while strengthening community ties.
