Project snapshot
Harlem-Bronx Garden Collective integrates a rooftop garden and expanded mural on a community shed to increase green infrastructure, biodiversity, and climate resilience in Harlem and the Bronx. The project installs a green roof with drought- and mildew-resistant, rooftop-suitable species (sunflowers, pollinator plants), designed with Columbia architecture students, reducing stormwater runoff, lowering site heat signature, and mitigating urban heat island effects. Coupled with a bird- and pollinator-themed mural (in collaboration with Greenthumb, the Audubon Mural Project, and artist Marthalicia Matarrita), it creates a productive, educational, and visual landmark for local environmental stewardship.
