Project snapshot

Inheritance/SHACK is a community art project that engages 12 Brooklyn residents in a carpentry skill-share to design and construct sculptures about the meaning of inheritance in a local community garden in East NY/Brownsville. Inspired by artist Beverly Buchanan’s work, this four- month interdisciplinary project gathers residents and activists to build shack-like sculptures using reclaimed wood and upcycled materials. Through walking tours, data collection, and technological interventions, the project aims to foster dialogue about familial, cultural, political, economic, and ecological realities while nurturing new spaces of transformational possibility. The project will culminate in October 2023 with the installation of the sculptures and a community celebration.
