Project snapshot

Since 2006, Red Hook Boaters has been instrumental in providing the Brooklyn community a unique opportunity to directly access and interact with the harbor, a rarity given the extensive shoreline yet limited accessibility. Our efforts allow anyone in New York City to experience kayaking at no cost, addressing the gap where the majority of Brooklyn’s residents, particularly from the low-income neighborhood of Red Hook, lack the means for on-water recreation. Our visibility in a popular park, alongside our vibrant presence on social media and local businesses, draws in participants. We foster a deep connection with the community, encouraging them to engage further as volunteers, which strengthens their relationship with the natural water environment.
