Project snapshot

The Blue Bus Project is launching the Shred & Create Mobile Bin program, a traveling initiative designed to empower Queens communities through sustainability-focused workshops. The program features a mobile shredding station that processes #5 polypropylene plastics—commonly found in items like yogurt cups and takeout containers—into reusable materials for community projects. Participants, from youth to seniors, will actively engage in sorting, shredding, and transforming waste into functional items like planters. This program also educates the public on proper plastic recycling, helping participants understand the different types of plastics and their environmental impacts. The first phase of the project will take place at the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement in Queensbridge, where residents will collaborate to create planters for their community garden. Afterward, the Blue Bus will continue traveling to other locations, expanding the program’s reach and fostering greater environmental awareness and creative engagement in local communities.
